The UNM Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center (HSLIC) is hosting a new exhibit entitled “The Untangling of Diabetes Mellitus.” The exhibit will be on display in the Domenici Center for Health Sciences Education auditorium lobby, October 28, 2009 – August 6, 2010. The auditorium lobby is open Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Diabetes has a long and interesting history. The disease was first recognized and recorded in Egypt during the 3rd Dynasty by physician Hesy-Ra. And yet, very little was understood about the disease and its complexities for centuries to follow. With the greater understanding of physics and chemistry during the 18th and 19th centuries the disease began to unravel leading to the discovery of insulin in 1921. Since that time many advances have been made in the treatment of diabetes including the implantable insulin pump, first developed here at UNM in the late 1970’s.
In conjunction with American Diabetes Awareness Month, HSLIC will also host a special lecture on the discovery of insulin by David Bennahum, M.D., followed by a panel discussion featuring several of UNM’s premiere researchers in the field, Wednesday, November 18, 12-1 p.m., Domenici Center for Health Sciences Education room 2112.
